    Tom’s Winning Blast-off

Tom Kohler-Cadmore’s 43-ball hundred, which launched the 2016 NatWest T20 Blast competition in such explosive fashion, has won him this year’s Walter Lawrence Trophy.

The 22-year-old smashed 5 sixes and 13 fours in his century, helping to post an unassailable total of 225 for 6 for Worcestershire Rapids in their 38-run victory over Durham Jets at New Road on May 20. The opener, nicknamed ‘Pepsi’, went on to score 127 from 54 balls, including 8 sixes and 14 fours, the highest score for the county in 14 years of T20 cricket.

It proved to be a night of double celebration for Kohler-Cadmore, who’d shaved his head to raise money for Cancer Research after team-mate Tom Fell suffered a second cancer scare before the start of the season, as Worcestershire announced before the match that Fell had been given the all-clear .

An outstanding schoolboy cricketer, the Chatham-born Kohler-Cadmore won a cricket scholarship to Malvern College, where he amassed three scores over 150 and averaged over 100 in his last year. He was named Wisden schools cricketer of the year in 2014 before joining Worcestershire and scoring 47 against Bangladesh A on his debut.

Following in the footsteps of Graeme Hick (1988) and Vikram Solanki (2009), Tom becomes only the third Worcestershire batsman to win the Trophy, which he will receive, along with prize money of £3,000, at the Walter Lawrence Presentation Dinner in The Long Room at Lord’s on November 9.

Now in its 82nd year, the Walter Lawrence Trophy, awarded for the fastest hundred of the season, is open to all domestic county competitions as well as One-Day Internationals, T20 Internationals and Test Matches in England.

A proverbial thorn in the Pakistan Women’s side this summer, the 25-year-old Kent Women opener and wicket-keeper had scored 70 in the First ODI, and 104 in the Second, during which she shared an opening stand of 235 with Lauren Winfield. Tammy’s unbeaten innings of 168, scored from 144 balls and including 20 fours, earned her the Player of the Match award, as England wrapped up the series with a decisive 3-0 victory. Assessing her winning knock, Tammy recalls, ‘I think the most pleasing thing about my innings was how I managed to go through the gears. Looking back at the highlights reel you get to see all the expansive shots I played at the back end of the innings and it made it look like it was just one of those days for a batter… we all seem to forget I was on about 10 after 10 overs!!’ Voted Women’s Player of the Summer by her England team mates in the PCA Awards, she also chipped in with innings of 82 and 55 in the three T20 games.

Tammy, who is a Chance to Shine Coaching Ambassador, grew up playing cricket with her father and brother for Sandwich CC, before making her debut for Kent in 2007. She made her England ODI & T20I debuts in the West Indies in 2009, before successfully captaining the England Women’s Academy team on tours to Sri Lanka in 2014 and the UAE in 2015. This year she was selected to open the batting for England in the World T20 Cup, since when she hasn’t looked back. To date, she has played in 2 Tests, 26 ODIs and 44 T20Is and, as well as Kent, she also represented Surrey Stars in the inaugural Kia Super League competition this season.

Tammy is set for a busy Winter, following back-to-back tours with England to West Indies (September 30 – October 22) and Sri Lanka (November 1 – 20), she joins the Big Bash in Australia. A chemistry and sports science graduate from Loughborough University, Tammy is the fifth winner of the Walter Lawrence Women’s Award since it was introduced and wins a special silver medallion and a cheque for £500.

Tom Haines of Hurstpierpoint College is the winner of this year’s Walter Lawrence Schools Award for his innings of 187, the highest score by a school batsman against MCC. He has been at Hurstpierpoint since the age of 14 and helped the College win the Schools National T20 competition in 2015.

In addition to his stellar performances for the school, the sixth-former, who has just turned 18, enjoyed an excellent Summer playing for Horsham CCC in the Sussex Premier League as well as appearing regularly for Sussex 2nd XI. To cap a wonderful season, the left-handed opener made his first-class debut for Sussex against Kent in the Specsavers County Championship, Division Two match at Hove on August 31.
